Tuesday 21st November 2023  Industry and context
Lo: to explore the social and political context of set products. To apply relevant theory to the contexual issue shown in text.

-2017- several terrorist attacks in England, which shook the country. The bombing at Manchester Arena in may. That killed 22 people.

How important is that context, in influencing the themes in killing eve as a media text?

Killing Eve is important in influencing the theme because of the female production team which represents the females in killing eve. The females are being represented differently then you would normally see in a spy drama which is stereotypically a male genre. The character Eve is shown to be really smart and loves her work, she also has no kids and that she has surrounded herself with work. She seems happy with her life.

Barthes- study the signs. signs that could be signifier a word, image, sound and others things such a rose which signal loves and romance.

levi strauss- the opposite each other for example: hot-cold, male-female, good-bad and others.

Barthes killing eve- ice cream, childish, innocent

what are the key events in these
finding about about the killer and that she not on record.

what mise-en-scene is used in these scenes that help establish Eve as a character
office, translation, police station

discuss the representation of eve and context of gender roles in this scene in season one ep 1

Eve is representing both masculinity and femininity in the first episode. She seem as a confident woman who likes to take risk. That can be seen in office where she asked for a cup of tea. A close up shot of the door closing that is highlighting Eve manipulation and her breaking the rule so she can ask a question which she not allow to ask. Another way Eve represents masculinity is her humour. When she is being representing femininity is when her boss turns her down. Example of that in the meeting when Eve says it a woman that could be doing the killer he turns her down.

27/11- Great analysis opening points here. T: Proof read to check for errors and 5. Link to social context at the time. 6. Explain how it links to Van Zoonen.

This can be linked with Van zoonen theory because of the role that Eve played. She is a strong female who is confident woman which is the masculinity stereotype.

Tuesday 28th November 2023
continue from last lesson

Determined:

-she stands up to bill in the office (the sound, she is persistent, desperate, low angle and mid shot of Eve this is to show power, she is respect, see her facial expression)

-close up on Eve face so she can put her point across with a serious nature in the office.

-she says her boss is lazy (persistent, dialog, her voice tone gets higher. feminine.)

-close up on the protes (shows her research, obsesses, determination, organised. she a postitive person and that she good at her job)

-the use of sound in the hospital scene shows her determination that can be seen with her using the same language as the victim.

-she was out of control when she listen to villanelle and decided to have her hair done.

-emotional at the end that can be shown with the mid close up shot of Eve face when the victim die you can see that she is scared yet she still try to get information.

butler:
Gender is created in how we perform our gender roles there is no essential gender identity behind these roles.

looking at all the element

villanelle is a Russian assassin who has money
Eve is a who has an education who works for the M15 who have money.

It goes against Bell hooks theory since though they are female they oppositiate the gaze since they are strong female who has money and are powerful.

Monday 11th December 2023

villanelle:
positive- she is powerful, likeable, funny, unique, skilled, lifestyle,
negative- dark behaviour, murderer, cruel, violent, long shot hospital room innocent nurses, who have be murdered brutally, malicious close up of the cut throat which was done by a knife shows of the violent act.

compare and contrast the techniques used to represents villanelle in episode one of killing Eve:

clear point how is villanelle represented: In the opening episode of killing eve we see villanelle introduced initially as a likeable character

scene description: the scene we see this is when she is joking around with boss Konstantin, this makes her likeable as this shows that she has a humour side and that she immature

textual detail- camera, MES, editing and sound: This is shown through her dialog as she jokes with Konstantin about watching a movie together and she predicts that he will refuse. mise-en-scene emphasises her humours side through her use of facial expression to highlight the mood of the business meeting.

the textual detail reinforces the representation: The use of the humour, makes villanelle seem warm, friendly and welcoming. The situation is quit dark as the meeting is about a father assassination request however this is reinforce that she is quit likeable to a normal converstation through her upbeat nature which appeals to the audience and the normalising of her nature

link to context: Two Russian people were killed and one was a double agent they lived in soulbury and were killed by a chemical weapon, this was to kill the double agent that betrayed Russia this is represented in the text as when villanelle finds out that she has to kill someone the next day she isn't surprised by the news and that Russia is known for assassin.

Theory: The theory that is reference Van zoonen/butler performance of gender, villanelle subverts the stereotype as she is respected by Konstantin and he needs her help.

However nearing the end of the episode of killing eve, Villanelle is being introduce as a violent and very skilled assassin character. That is seen in the scene when Eves find that the innocent nurses were brutally murdered this makes her not a likeable character and that she is violent. This is shown through the camera works. A long shot of the hospital room with the innocent nurses you can see blood over the walls and the bed and on the floor of the hospital. Then a close up shot of Eve holding the girls neck to stop her from bleeding out, this shows that villanelle is a cruel, malicious killer. The girls throat has be cut by a knife which is showing that she is a violent person. The use of sound when Eve is crying out for help shows that what villanelle did was very dark and brutal, but it also shows her skills as an assassin. This might not appeal to the audience as of villanelle behaviours. This reveals that villanelle not only is she a likeable character, who is funny and is skilled, but that she has a dark behaviour and can be cruel which makes her less likeable to the audience. The social context in this is that in soulbury two Russian people where murdered, they were killed by a chemical weapon this is represented in the text when the assassin happens, Russian people are known for assassination and that can be seen when villanelle kills the innocents people and even when she gets news that she has another request, she wasn't surprised by the news. The theory that is reference is van zoonen and butler performance of gender, that is shown with villanelle who is suberting the stereotype as she is respected by Konstantin, villanelle is also very skilled and powerful.

LO: to explore the representation

starter task:
Aaron Hotchner from criminal minds: he is a strong dominate leader of the FBI, he is very formal and his facial expression is always cold, however he is caring.

Killing Eve male characters:

Masculinity as caring and protective- Bill
-When he ask about how Niko is and caring about her relationship that is shown through the dialog.
-Bill is leaning slightly on the desk talking to Eve like he is telling her off like a father would, that is seen with the wide shot, he is being protective.
-close up on bill holding Eve hand when in the office that is showing that he is being caring and protective.
-when Eves is sitting on the toilet, Bill calls her asking where she that is showing bill is caring about her whereabouts that is shown through dialog. which is postitive

LO: to explore the theory and representation in set products.

baudrillard- postmodernism keywords:
hyper real- real locations of realism is re-created
simulation-
sinulara- the m15 office

Baudrillard notes KE:
-Minimal intertextuality establishes a 'real' world.
-Has verisimilitude, lack of bricolage and fragmented narrative.
-Narrative in real world settings, London, Paris, Vienna, Tuscany.
-representation of M15 is and secret service is a simulation of the real world. Attempts to created hyper reality of the secret service.

gauntlett and identity:
-killing Eve offers divrse and contradictory that audience can usr to think about their idenity as they have the time and resources to develop implied representation through Eve, villanelle, carolyn and the several male roles.
-Spys and espionage is a genre that us popular world wide and each country has its own version of the service. increasing the diversity of reprsentation to reach an international audience.

Hall:
-Attempts to create a dominate meaning through the use of ideology of gods vs evil support the preferred of those who created the laws social norms in society.
-stereotype of gender, race, class, the representations are created by what is there but also what is missing, ecomic struggle, sexism, racism the characters and situations are not faced with the reality of these in the episode along with disability.

Tuesday 9th January 2024  Theory and audience and industry
Lo: to explore the audience and industry and apply to set products.

dominate reading- accepts the preferred meaning and ideological meaning.
negotiated reading- some of the decoded message is accepted but the audience disagrees with parts of it and so changes it to fit their experience and values.
oppositional reading- both the preferred meaning and any ideological assumptions encoded in the product are rejected.

The power of the audience in questing Eve and her methods alongside villanelle and her motivations. Also highlights which perceptive those in 'power' perceive representation of gender, race and class.

dominant: Eve is committed to saving lives due to her job and goes beyond the call of duty to find the truth.

negotiated: agree with the need for patriotic duty but find eve and her methods unrealistic.

oppositions: British propaganda-demonising those from Russia as others and promoting the rule of British law.

Bandura media effects:
bandura believes that the media can have a direct influence on the values and behaviour of audience members. The media can also indirect influence through social networks. He argues that audiences many imitate behaviours they see represented in the media especially those which show violence or aggression.

In killing eve the representation of violence are placed are alongside of black humour trivialise the violence and the serverity and therefore could be seen to imitate the behaviour. There are still patriarchal ideals within the text as the roles with higher power are men. Therefore through the male characters in m15 can reinforce patriarchal ideals in the mind audience.

Gerbner cultivation:
draws attention to the need investigate the longer term effects on  individuals who consume LFTVD box-sets.
Attitudinal effects of violent representation suggest that televison programmes create the belief to the audience that the world is a dangerous place, with negative events.
supports the idea that tv should be regulated to avoid harm.

The hospital scene where Eve was sitting on the toilet and on the phone shows the lack of trust with the police and the government.

Lo: To explore the narrative theory and genre theory. To apply the theory to the set text.

Narratology todorov:
Narratology is the study of narrative.
Equilibrium {where nothing occurs}
The disruption
The recognition
The new equilibrium

How the parts fit together to fix a whole.

-The equilibrium in lupin is where the main character is doing his daily life and working in the museum as a cleaner, everything looks normal and nothing is happening. Living in a racist society but happy with his father, single family life {flashback} not really a providing for his son and unstable life.

-The disruption is when the gang people comes to lupin house and was hanging him over the balcony or when they attempt to steal the necklace.  His father is wrongly accused and killed himself.

-The recognition is when he realised he was alone, his father is very traditional

-The attempt to resolve the disruption is when he attempts to take the necklace back

-The new equilibrium is when he gets away with the necklace and happy with his new life.

None linier structure, lots of flashback, inapprotant age gap, the voiceover, red herrings, arguably serves two purposes.

provides an overviwe of assanes plan and explains how babaker mistreatment led to the central conflict of the narrative

the non-liner narrative is also used to misdirect the audience, adding to the tenison and suspense in the first episode.

Genre theory: neale
He talks about what the genre are, how it created and why it created, the change endure or decline.
Neale aruges that genre is a process by which generic codes and conventions are shared by producers and audience trough repetition in media products.
genres are not fixed, but constantly evolve with each new addition to the generic corpus. often playing with gern codes and conventions or becoming hybris with others genres.

Usefulness with the primarily to explain film genre, but can be applied to LFTVD as this is the most filmic form of television output, requiring an intertextual relay of pre-publicity and reviews to generate the large audience required.

Lupin: no star vehicle, but also the name of the series indicates the genre from the book the gentleman burglar. Crime/thriller, twists to the plot, causing of the joint, gang, plan and robbery.

difference: The gang is hopeless, robbery is not central to the plot, uses elements of police procedural at the end, family drama between Assange and his son.

genre of lupin-
crime thriller
mystery
heist {voiceover, flashback, slow mo}

lupin- heist, strong, confident protagonist, Sherlock, police negative, others focused on criminals.

both killing eve and lupin have serious soical issues/themes addressed.

intertextual relay: published on Netflix, advertised through Netflix

Todorov and Neale trailer: money hiest

Equilibrium- The main character being on the run.
The disruption- Joining a group with other criminals and doing the crime
The recognitions-  The police showing up to try and catch them
The attempt to solve-
The new equilibrium- still being criminals and people joining their side.

crime, thriller, action, mystery, romance.

Tuesday 30th January 2024  context-Lupin
LO: to explore the context of the production, and contextual themes in set episode.

Industry context:
Written by an english writer and scripted in English, it was then translated into french by a french writer who co-write some of the episode into a French setting and situations.

Internationally it has been very successful and this could be because its appeals to both audiences through the joint writing and fitting to the context of both cultures accurately.

OPENING SCENE: media language- analysed how media language create suspense and signify the genre {0-7:38 minutes}

style-

lighting-

camerawork-

sound-

editing-

There are several compelling representation, including that of Assane, the Pellegrini family, the representation of Babakar when Assane was a teenager and the thought-provoking depiction of the black immigrant experience.

Despite being the protagonist, Assane is entertainingly aware that he overlooked by authorities. Interesting scene to analyse could be when Assane explains to the drug-ring leader, Vincent. 'see, you underestimated me...just like they do' alluding to the power imbalances between the working class and upper-class that exist in contemporary paris.

The clothing when they are cleaning is a tracksuit that it makes them look a bit like prisoners.

economic context: Money

Lupin is set in just Paris, the captial of France showing that they don't have that much money, however in killing Eve is set in different places such a the UK, Paris and other location in Europe, we can see that killing Eve has more money for productions.

Lupin won two awards and one of them was for the most popular French film and turned out to be the very successful on Netflix.

social context: the social groups and people

The class in killing Eve is middle class whereas Lupin has more class and hightlights the glass divison.
crime is one of a number indicators of social decay or, at best, decline

cultural context: about the country and the people
France is known for being the highest European countries for gender equality.

Intertextual context:
The use of the mona Lisa which is internationally known
the book Arsene lupin the gentleman burglar
shots of the eiffel tower in the episode and the louvre reference countless films and tourist texts
The show of the rough banlieue referne the seats in french tv
lupin links to the pink panther and the sanit.

historical context: Things that had happened around the time of production

political context

social context

Crime is one of a number of indicators of social decay or, at best, decline.

The racial tension is acknowledge in lupin within society as are race and class are seen as intersectional, in every situation those in power are white and those who are lower are people colour.

cultural context

Monday 5th February 2024.     Male characters
Lo: to explore the narrative and characterisation in set products

The representation of men we might see in lupin is wealthy this is directed at the old man who got lupin dad arrest. He is a cheat, manipulative and lier- mr rellegrine

strong and determine to get the necklace back- Assane

criminal negative- loan shark

stereotypical male in appearance- muscular gang member

skilled- police man {only one}, jeweller, Assane

weak, inadequate, lack of eduction- gang member

unstable, unreliable as a father/provide- lupin

scene analysis {5:23-11:32} media language

Assane- fits in with the lower class, challenges the gang, intelligence,

The gang members- The members are seen as threating that is seen when they held lupin over the balcony. Location indicates lower-class, they are rude, blunt, money hungry, lazy, greedy, prey on the vulnerable

The father {Bakakar}- He is charming and a gentleman as the women called him, he is skilled, intelligence, friendly, polite, chivalrous, social awareness

sound- The music started

editing-

camera- The esablising shot the the gang members locations shows they are lower class

mise en scene- the tv of the game shows the gang laziness, the baggy clothing, the hood up shows that Assane fits in with the lower class

Compare and contrast the way that men are first represented to the audience in Lupin

The men that are represented to the audience are different that is shown in the beginning of the episode with The father, Bakakar and the gang members.

The gang members are seen as not educated. That is shown through the establing shot of the location of where flats, its showing that they are lower class which could possibly link to them having a lack of education. Not only are they seen as not educated but also lazy and threating. When they had Assane over the balcony indercaite that they are threatening people, its not along shows with that scene but also the masular gang member and the tatoons. The use of the Tv where one of them are playing a video game shows the laziness. The use of dialoge shows that they are rude and blunt, that he seen they they ask Assane to come in.

Whereas Bakakar is a polite man. That is seen when he was helping out the blonde women with her car, he stops to help her.

Tuesday 6th February 2024   Characters
lo: to explore the narrative and characterisation in set products.

What happens in the scene
-He is taking on the higher class role and goes to the auction
-the history of the necklace
[flashback]
-the pool scene and the kiss
-car scene racial/class discrimnation
-the gang being cleaners

how is Assange represented
-confident, successful,
-outcast, (awkward, sergration is felt, invite and body language of the people around him)

why this scene is effective and significant for the plot in episode one
-The background of the necklace and helps the audience understand why they are stealing the necklace along with the flashbacks to show the backstory of Assane and the pelligrins

how does this highlight the class differences in French society

how is the mise en scene used to show this
-His clothes are fancy and clean
-lighting and setting (contrast between the cleaners and the higher class, levi strauss)
-the class difference, clothes, positioning

gilroy:
The black atlantic suggests the way in which black cultures blend elements of different of african, american, caribbean and european cultures. Postcolonialism suggests the ways in which colonial history continues to influence attItudes to ethinity with an assumption of the superiority of white western cultures.

gilroy draws attentions to the continuing roles colonial ideology- of the superiority of white white western culture across a range of representations

The history of colonialism continuing to influence attitudes to ethnicity in western societies.

Britain has failed to mourn its loss of empire, creating 'postcolonial melancholia' an attachment to an airbrushed version of British colonial history, which expresses in criminalising immigrants and an 'us and them' approach to the world founded on the belief in the inherent superiority of white western civilisation.

Compare and contrast the way that contextual issues are represented to the audience.

The contextual issues that is being represented are the different class and racial. This is seen with Assane as he takes on a higher class role in the auctions. In the long shot he walking down on the red carpet you can see he wearing a grey fancy suit and its looks clean.

Monday 19th February.      Race and class-Lupin
LO: To explore the social context and race through the characterisation in set products.

starter task: explain the different connotations of how the two antagonists are portrayed through their costume, hair and makeup?

villanelle is dressed up and looks beautiful, her hair is neatly done, she is wearing makeup and is dressed up in a pink dress. She doesn't look like antagonist and she is a female which goes against the stereotype of a spy/thriller

whereas the gang member is a stereotype low class. He is looks rough and casual clothing. They are lowshark and try to steal things whereas villanelle is a serial killer, but the gang member is shown in a more negative way.

reflecting social attitudes:
what is the stance of france on immigration- The public has strong negative perception of the immigration on france. While very few believes it has been positive. very far right, build more a selective immigration system that welcomes students and well educated workers but enacts restrictions for asylum seekers.

what is the stance of france on class division-
There a big division from the subberbs and the central drance, they are very excluded abd looked down on which makes the subberbs hates them.

how is multiculturalism presented in killing eve
-through Eve, villanelle, Elena, niko
Eve is a koren/American is a positive representation, we also have Elena who is black. whereas villaninelle is represented as a Russian assassion who is respesented as a bad character.

how is immigration and multiculturalism presented in lupin
-

what does this suggests about the countries of their production

what does it present the social context of the uk vs France

class issues in lupin-
cleaner- lower class, different eithiclity, not glamous lifesltyle, muted lighting- sad life of the reality cleaner, dull colours. Pleased with new job and little trust between the gaurds and the cleaners, shows the divided between the classes.

lack of control, grevity, no law and order, muted lighting, lower class, no care of the place, the arial shot to show that the place is dull and have no colour. He wearing a hoddie, social decay, gang, tile to emphasis the hight of the flats. not a posh apartment plot, very small, video games, big graffiti on the wall, sports wear stereotypical- lower class elements,

gang in action-
tapping quickly on the buttons, he picks the car which cant fit in- lack of knockledge and awareness, lower class

Race issues:
The person says 'someone like you' is says its because he so young so the mistrust

the flashback- He getting accused of stealing the necklance and the police doesnt do anything, plus the wife doesn't mention anything.

barthes-
The signs that signify class is run down places, muted lighting, lack of eduction, criminals and clothing such as hoodie, sport wear. Rich people would have fancy things and would be wearing suits, money and are mostly males.

The signs that signify race is stereotypical looked down on, known to be criminals or accused of stealing something.

Bell hooks-
The ex wife
Julelet
The lady in the cleaning team

levi strauss-
rasism/equality
rich/poor
educated/uneducated

Lo: to explore the social context of gender through the characterisation in set products.

Van zoonen- Talks about feminist and how they are used as sexual objects, the gender roles performs. gender expectation. Historical and cultural impact gender roles

gauntlett- identity and how they change over time. for example feminism. or finding out parts of your identity through the representation of the characters.

what representation of gender do we find in lupin?
The gang members, stereotypical lower class of masculinity
Mr pelligrine- he is very well put together and is rich
babaker- nice, polite, sensitive, throughful, not tough
Assan- can been seen as the hero character because he trying to chnage to be a better father, he not prefect, doesn't have a steady job.

juliet- objective, seen as powerful only because of her looks
the wife- lack of power, doesnt stand up for the father, control by her husband
female cleaner- lack of power, gets played,
single mum- at the mercury of the males, has the pull through

Hall: stereotype
Representation needed to be fixed, stereotypes are construscted should be pulled apart and deconstructed to identify what they tell us about ideology.

social issues:
racial inequality-
Ethnic people are looked down upom, could be seen with baaker when he is wrongly accussed for stealing the necklance, he being looked down on mr prillinge.

class inequality-
the gang

Killing eve: social issues
Gender equality- They are beening in power

Multiculturalism as part of everyday life-

career focused women-

demonisation of Russia-

how are the lead protagonists in Lupin and killing Eve used to reflect societal issues?

In lupin you can see that Assane reflect the societal issues of racial and class inequality issues. In the start of lupin you can see that Assane is a cleaner, this shows he is a lower class and the different ethnicity. The lighting muted and the colours is dull which shows the sad life of the reality of a cleaner. Although Assane is pleased with the new job, the little interaction between the guards and him so the lack of trust between them. The dull lighting also shows how the lower class are being looked down on and that the guards are superior to them. This emphasis the difference between the divided class. This links to class inequality issues as you see both mid/higher class and the lower class are divided but also the racial issues too since the cleaner we seen are different ethnicity. Another example is the flashback scene with bakaker when he is being wrongly accused of stealing the necklace this shows the racial issues. The wife doesn't stand up or say anything to stop it and the police doesn't do anything. The social issues in France at the time was that the public had a strong negative view on immigration and have a more selective sysmery where they welcome well educated worker or students immigration which can be linked to racial issues. France pushed the lower class to the suburbs which means it a higher rate in crime and poverty, this links with the class inequality. The racial issues can be linked with barthes theory since we can see the signs of race, the signs singfiy stereotypical as being looked down upon, stealing and being known as criminals. This can also link to class inequality with the run down buildings, muted lighting and and then the rich people are wearing fancy suits, mostly males.

However in Killing eve there is a more gender equality and class equality. You can see that with Eve who reflects the issues. Eve is a strong, confident women who doesn't obey by the laws, however although she is a confident women who is working in a male dominated sociality this does however mean she is not appreciated nor trusted because of this. This is seen in the meeting, where they talked about the assassin, Eve is seen to be very confident as she says she thinks it might be a women, however the boss shuts her down which shows the lack of respect and trust. The mid shot of Eve boss, the camera is at a low angle which shows his power and authority over Eve as she is being shut down by her stuggesion.

Monday 26th February 2024.    representation-gender
Lo: Analyse a selection of scenes using accurate media terminology.

Notes:
The gang are being represented as not well educated and not skilled. That is seen with the close up short when one of the gang members tried to spray something into the guards eyes, they were meant to harm and blind the guards, however failed which links to them being unskilled. goes against Neale

The upper class are being represented in the action hall as rich and fancy. They all are dressed up in fancy clothes, some were wearing black suits which shows that they are rich and are betting on a very expensive necklace. It shows there power in society. For example, the daughter of the prellgrins is dressed very formal, her hair is done perfectly and she is wearing makeup, the low angle shorts shows that she has power of society and that she is upperclass. Also the mid shot of when that guy is competing with Assane on betting the necklace, he is wearing a nice fancy black suit and show he in the upperclass and rich because the money kept going up as he and assane kept betting on the necklace.

Mise en scene- the lighting is darker {low key} in the cleaning era, looks like prison with the grey which contast with the high key lighting

In the aeral angle we seem more white french men then we do with multiculturalism. From what that is seen, Assane is the only person who is coloured. This links to the theory about race. The people who holds more power tend to be more white

Mr pellegrini-
He is being represented as rude, rich and not a kind man. This can be shown with the dialouge Bakakar shows that he is rude and unkind. The way he dressed links to him being rich. He dressed very nicely and the books on his shelf look fancy and old, his office looks expesitive. The extor of the walls and the decor can be a representation of someone who is rich. Disrecrepful, body language

Mrs pellegrini- She seem nice compare to her husband, She is much kinder then mr pellegrini and that is shown with the dialoge when she offers Bakakar a book to take with him to give to his son. However she is under control of her husband and does not talk back to him. Isn't respectful, cares about social states

Bakakar- He is polite.

The gang & Assane- The  gang are being represented as bad and uneducated whereas Assane is smarter and nice. The gang makes mistake in the plan and find themselves in trouble, but Assane did the plan and successful did it. The gang is unorganised and messy as they take down the guards and take the security camera.

Levi-strauss: Binary opposition

rich/poor -the rich are more intelliange and earned for their money, the poor are destined to fail and have to steal to earn money.
educated/uneducated
equality/inequality
Power/cunning- Assane is cunning which is negative thing
Insiders/outsiders
exploitation/caring for others

The shot that was used to highlight Assane mistrust in equality is the over shoulder shot, This shows who he having a conversion with. This is also to show the other character facial expression. The editing used to emphasise his link to the necklace and the severity of the racism his father experienced is through the flashback scenes. Assane father was being accursed for stealing the necklace.

The camera shots emphasise the injustice

The close and mid shot emphasise facial expression

barthes-
white gloves connote delicate, valuable and worthy which links to being rich and posh since the necklace is very expressive.Tattoos can link with lower class and the gang members which is stereotypical, the griffit on the walls which show the decay in society. The sport wear also connote lower class.  puretity of the necklace. The babaker scene, study room, books on the wall, decorated with elegance, the big desk show they have money and education. Money give you power, educated give you power.

prison flashback:
cw- eastabling shot of the prison {more relaxed with no gaurd and guns}
tunking
clsoe up shot
long shot
sad music
thunder, rain
go to hell madam

The camera shot at the beginning was a establishing shot to show where it is setting and what the prison looks like. The prison seem to be represented as more relaxed, that is shown with the fences being short, no guards being around and no guns. This is not a stereotypical prison. The low angle shot of the police offer when Assane was in that small tight space represents law and justice, it is creating superior and power over Assane, it also shows his facial expression which looks disgust and a close up on Assane face which is to show is facial expression, he looks scares and nervous. The music soon turns sad as Assane bury his father, the music is none-diegetic and then the use of the diegetic sound with the rain and thunder set the sad mood with the sad music which is called a pathetic fallacy. The sad music is intense and sad. The dialogue that is used to mock the idea of being a gentleman is shown with Assane talking to Mrs pellgrini. He says 'Thank you ma'am' and then 'go to hell ma'am' the use of ma'am is mocking being a gentleman and being resecpfully because of how he said 'ma'am'  this is to make her feel bad for not standing up for his father and for not saying anything.

The capture of the gang, the polcie officer and assane

mise en scene-
stealing the necklace,
suit
wide shot
close up

The genres that are represented are action, crime, police and mystery. The mise en scene we see people dressed up in police uniform, that is shown through the wide shot where people where standing around. The glass o the floor represents crime and action, that is shown with the wide long shot this link with crime and action and the stealing of the necklace which link to crime and action. When the detective question Assane and checked him before he leaves the building because he was thought he was suspicious, that is shown with the close up shot of his face, he looks like he didn't trust Assane and checked him out by going through his blazer.

Tuesday 5th March 2024  media language and representation analysis
Lo: analyse a selection of scene using accurate media terminology

The capture of the gang, the police officer and Assane:

Crime thriller- the intense car crush in the museum, the police presuredeal- close up shots of the gang being arrested, their faces smash to the floor, the conversation of the necklace
the main police men is wearing leafer jacket, casual, his body language is tight and more confrontational, separate from the suit

the use of over the shoulder shot of the interrogation, shows no sympathy, serious facial expression, the dialogue is important its show the genre, the police is not the protagonist.
Close up of the police and evident bag.

The biggest surprised for the audience is the marching of the genre, the cat and mouse chase early one, make them want to watch it, protagonist going ahead of the police. The heist is doesn't go to plan which is different and least expect.

social realism: when the text or character reflect the issues of society

sky scapers shows the class divise, the tv is old, small living room, the fan suggest its hot, basic, the clothes drying suggest no backgarded, flat, a expressive book means its his main present, grateful for the book, functional flat, the book being wrapped and care for, reveal not a lot in material possession.

The mise en scene reinforce the issue of class division in France that is shown through the small living room, the old tv and the fan. The fan could suggest that the room is hot because of how small the place is, the clothes drying on the heater is an indercation that they have no backgarden. When Assane got the present, the book was carefully wrapped and care for, he was grateful for the gift which reveal not a in material possession. Whereas the prillinage how many nice things.

Life is shown for the lower end of society as

The escalation of racial divide shown in the scene through the news on the tv explaining the stealing of the necklace. They only talk about where he is from and did not mention his name or age nor did they say anything about him being loyal and working for the prellingi and how he is hard working.

Audience theory: Bandura and gerbner

bandura: The media influence people directly
The media can influence directly or indirectly through related platforms such as social media so we can become influenced by the media without being exposed to them

gerbner: Effects of violent representation suggest that television programmes create the belief to the audience that the world is a dangerous place, with negative events. mean world, mistrust in the wold because of what you see in the media for a long period of time.

Fearful of the hate in sociality- gerbner

bandura- rejecting certain behaviour

Assange's real life shown in the flashback as nice and luxurious, that is shown through the mise en scene with loads of books on the wall, tall window and the mac, this is all to reveals his true identity and class.

His rolse shows the difference in french society

The unrealistic of the nature of the heist is that the plan was over planned which made he heist not realist which takes away the social realism.

Lo: to explore the industry theorists and how these can be applied to the set text.

Tv production, distribution and circulation-
American has followed the free enterprise model, meaning that the commercial Tv become dominated by a few networks.
HBO in the 90s subscription and satellite meant less adverts and better quality programming.

Power and media industries: Curran and seaton
Media industries follow the normal capitalist pattern of increasing concentration of ownership in fewer hands. this leads to a narrowing of the range of opinion represented and pursuit of profit at the expense of quality or creativity.

cultural industries: Hesmondhalgn
Cultural production is owned and controlled by a few conglomerates who vertically integrate across a range of media to reduce risk.
Risk is particularly high in the cultural industries because of the difficulty in predicting success, High production costs, low reproduction costs and the fact media products are 'public goods'
Big hits to cover the costs of failure
repetition through use of stars, genres, franchises, repeatable narratives  and so on to formats to audience, then industries and government try to impose scarcity, especially through copyright laws.
The internet has created new powerful IT corporation and has not transformed cultural production in a liberating empowering way.

show runner- Individual or small team, usually a writer or producer who places a personal stamp on the drama and gives it 'authored' quality.

Killing eve- Featured different female writers who already had critical acclaim and recognition of their successes.

Lupin- George Kay wrote/co-wrote all the episodes and he collaborated with Francois Uzan a Parisian, who translated the international themes in to a glamorous national French context, this is the possible for the success.

Jenkins: fandom

fans as textual poaches- taking elements form media texts to create their own culture.
The development of the new media has accelerated participatory culture in which audience are ative and creative participants rather than passive consumers. Fans create online communities, produce new creative forms, collaborate to solve problems and shape the flow of media.
From this perspective, convergence is a culture process rather than a technological one.

This applies to the range and diversity if representation offered by LFTVD to textual poachers who wish to use these products to create their own culture in fan sites
Many LFTVD achieve cult status adding their value for fans.

Participatory culture- The idea that the development of new media allowss the audience to be active and creative.

Convergence culture- Media is shared, adapted and consumed constantly on a range of different platforms.

spreadable media- adapted by the audience for their own and share with others.

social groups represented in Lupin:
Race
class

Tv drama represent social groups are shown differently most times but some also can be represented the same way, that is shown through Killing Eve and Lupin.

We see the social groups of ethicnity in Lupin being represented in a negative way. That is shown through Babakar getting arrested for stealing the necklace. The wide shot of the library where all the the police standing around shows the different in ethicnity, also in the dialoge when Mr prilligrini says he was lurking around like he was being a criminal, you can see the mid shot of Mrs prillgrini looking over to the book shelves with the fast past editing as the camera also shows a quick close up of the book missing this made him look guilty when she didn't speak up and with the book gone. This links in what was going at the time in france in 2021 with the law of immigration and how they wanting to keep them out.

  4. connotations create myths in society are ideological meaning that are natural
Evaluate how effective you find one of the following theories in understanding long term television drama: Halls theories of representation

Representation implicates the audience in creating meaning. Can show what is presented and what is absent or different that can create the representation.

Litmation to Hall: General theory of representation and not specific to LFTVDs

Hall talks about representation and how it is used to create meaning and how the meaning can change, also what can be presented, what is absent or what is different that can create representation and what isn't there and if it is what are the stereotypes.

This is relevant as shown in killing Eve, We can see the representations that are shown is gender and stereotypes which is being protayed as positive. The main character, Eve is good for the representation as she is being shown working in a high payed and dominated industry, the M15, however despite gender being shown as a more positive thing, she is still being treated as someone who doesn't know much and has a lack on knowledge by her male boss which is stereopical. Frank is the big boss and doesn't seem to take Eve very seriously when she speaks up about it being a women, instead he lies, this is the stereotype of a male boss and what it like for a female to be working under the male dominated industry, however, Eve goes against the stereotype of being a female, she is seen as stronge, confident and subbon a The thing that we don't see in in Killing Eve is the ecomic struggles, as we have seen all the characters are working in a good paying job and tend to be either middle class or higher class. This breaks the social realism of what is real and what isn't real.

In lupin they are more fouced on the social issues within society and how racism is represented within frence and the class inequality

Hall talks about representation and how it is used to create meaning and how the meaning can change, also what can be presented, what is absent or what is different that can create representation and what isn't there and if it is what are the stereotypes.

This is relevant as shown in killing Eve, we can see the representation of gender and stereotypes are being potayed as a postitive thing. The main character, Eve is a good for the representation as she is being shown working in a high payed male dominated industry, the MI5, she is seen as being confident, brave and very knowledgeable which goes against the stereotype of femininity. However, this despite being a female in the a high dominated industry, she does get push down and is not being taken seriously when she speaks up by her male boss, this is reinforces the stereotype of being a female. You can see many different scenes that shows the stereotypes of gender and what is there and what isn't there which can be linked to Halls theory. These stereotypes can create meaning that there are still some males who view woman as people who has a lack of knowegled and aren't capable of being a argent, however the females are creating meaning by showing that they can do whatever they want and don't let the dominated industry stop you from aching your dreams.

what are the context of production and consumption
Killing Eve- Production is through the BBC and BBC america, it become really popular and is now everywhere such as Netflix. Also female team. During covid people were exploring more and the series got popular, having Sandra oh helped with the popular rate. British writer. Mainly american viewers. Theory: Hesmengaign lowering the risk of using the star sanda oh and unsure profit, Neale: genre is well known and spy thriller translate to other and its a hybrid of genre, female lead development of genre. Context: politics and Donald trump,

Lupin- Production through Netflix, it wasn't as popular as killing Eve therefore you cant watch it anywhere other then Netflix. Although it was successful for it being a different language serird maybe it could be due to it having a british writer which meant it work with globe somethings and Coivd having a big impact on how successful its been because being stuck inside and are wanting to learn another language. context: migration, increased in far right wing, class division. Theory: gilroy ethnicity which links with the context of migration, butler gender performance of mr peliigrini who is a white rich man. liivingstone and lunt is regulation links with production text.

what dominate conventions are followed
Killing Eve- the dominate convention typical representation shown and the genre. The mi5 as the leaders, argue that russia is the enemy, following stereotype from the cold war which can be linked with context.  context- cold war, fear of the other, russia spies on uk land, theory; gerber make people feel mistrust.

Introduction: Barthes talks about semiology and how a word or images can signals something. He talks about semiotic and connotation and denotations that are signs make ideologies that become natural and normal. These reflect the dominate values and ideological.

paragraph one: talks about KE and how the ice cream is showing love and childish which makes the kids shown as innocent and move loved, the shopping bag and the hosptail scene

Paragraph two: Talks about LP, barthes is seen more with the white gloves connates delicate and worth. The tattoons can be use to connote people of lower class

Paragraph three: Doesn't tell us anything about the owner ship and control of teveviosn, does not tell us about the audience interpret, less usefulness media lanhuage elements such as narrative and genre

conclusion:

Barthes theory talks about the semiotic and the connotation and denotation that are signs make ideologies that become natural and normal. This is useful because it can be appiled to any signs such as a word or an image. These reflect the dominate values and ideological.

In killing we can see at the beginning with Villanelle and the child eating the ice cream, the camera slowlys zooms in onto the kid who happily eating the ice cream, you can see by her facial expression that she a happy child. The ice cream is connotes love and compassion, but also innocents and childish. Which shows that children gets more loved.

In lupin we see more of what barthes talks about with the white gloves which is connotes delicate and worth and that holding the necklace is very valuble which can be linked with being rich and posh in the upper class, we can also see this again but with the lower class. Tattoons can be used to connote people of lower class such as gang members, along with wearing sports wear these can be a semiology of how a lower class is seen and are linked with. It also help to understand the difference in socaiey. You can also see in the flashback scene that babaker house is small comapare to the prillgins

The limtaion doesn't tell us about the owership and the control of the tevelison and the less usefulness is the media language such as narrative and genre

HOMEWORK-DIRT

Redoing question 4 because I got the wrong theory.

Shirky talks about how technological developments have changed the relationships between media producers and audiences. Shirky also mention how the 'old' media use to be produced and created for the audience and now the 'new' media is being created by the audience. The usefulness for the theory for LFTVD is that it can drawn attention to the fact LFTVD can create things and provide value by making website, merchandise for that fandom.

This can be applied to killing Eve as its a popular
