Tuesday 12th September 2023  stranger things

LO: to investigate the principles behind theories to critically apply theories to texts.

There are elements of sci-fi and horror

Ml: 80S language, 80s decor

the high school experience is represented bullies and relationship which share the school experience.

the police represented shows that they aren't supportive, they are not clean and he doesn't help the mum to find her son.

high school bullies relation to homosexuality.

the single mum is shown not to be the best and that the older brother in the family is shown to be more of the mother figure because at the start its shows him cook breakfast and he also respoable for waking up his younger brother.

Ironythe expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite
Parody/Homage- making fun of things/ looking at someone as inspiration
Bricolage-construction or creation from a diverse range of available things
Intertextual references- referring to other texts
Fragmented narrative- broken narrative where things doesn't make sense
Self reflexivity- reflecting yourself
Common themes ( What if?) - has this really happened
Loss of reality- When a person doesn't know what is real.

Lack of Verisimilitude- real or true

hyperreality: is the idea that representation are now more powerful and real than reality
hyperreal: representation dont represent reality, instead they are representation of representations
simulacra: is artificial copies of reality

the postmodernism in the text is shown in different scene one being the  school and the other being the in the interrogation room.

Monday 18th September 2023   music as protest HIP HOP and beyond

what is representation? representation is how they are presented and stereotype.

how are these people represented?

The people are represented as threatening this could be shown in there facial expression, they are also represented as a gang for example by the what their clothes they all seem to be dressed the same and other way that shows that is their oversized gold.

what can music do?

music can be a form of protest that we still listen today without realising.

rap music can rebellion and rap music criticise injustices for black men but maintains sexist attitudes to black women.

80s and 90s hiphop music:

  • humble beginnings
  • making it!
  • police - critique
  • abusive relations
  • sex- boasts success
  • superheroes:
  • appreciation of women
  • postitive empowering
  • masculinity positive
  • mindset
  • police negative

Tuesday 19th September 2023   Rupaul and identity

LO: to investigate the theoretical framework in a text to discuss media theorist and to critically apply theories to text.

How can you define identity:

I identity is what makes you you for example where you are from and how you describe yourself.

what makes up a person's identity:

its where you're from and your personality that makes a person identity.

audience: a group of people who looks at different forms of media.

gauntlett is a range of difference and contradictory messages about identity, this can be used to get the audience to think about their own identity such as gender and sexuality which is now normal in this gerentration.

rupual notes:

what are the elements of identity that are presented: when rupual identity angeria as she when she wasn't dressed up in drag meaning that she identity as her

How are these shown as fluid and open in the show: when rupual dress normally, but rupual is till fashionable  and when it came to the show rupual is then dressed up and it shows that its open and rupual is fluid in gender.

what are the elements of gender that are presented:

however,  the drag queens are represented females it not all postived for those who are females the female were presented to be perfect that could be seen with the drag queens such as the makeup which they wore a lot off this presented stereotype of  femininity, and how big their breast were which isn't a good refection on females because not all women have that. when it came to the stage and doing the talent it showing them dancing, singing and jokes which is giving the representation of how being a female is perfect.  they are following the stereotype of traditional female, although it does help people who are struggling with their own identity, seeing people dressing up as the opposite gender. this allows people to relate to this.

Monday 25 September 2023.   Gender and bond

LO: to investigate tohe theoretical framework in a set text to discuss various theories to critically apply theory to texts.

what do you see:

what is media language?

  • mise en scence
  • camera work
  • editing
what mise en scene is used:
male- suit, smart, clean, respected, covered
female-  body shot with no face in the frame, revealing, objective.

what camera shot it used:
over the shoulder shot
and mid long shot
low angel {show people power}

James Bond- man with the golden  gun

NOTES:
how are women represented:
  • close up shots of the female body meaning that she was sexualised
  • low angel of he males looking up at the female to shows that they hold more power which makes the female looks like an object.
  • revealing clothes
  • when the music changes to something more seductive when they are kissing
  • the lighting is low key
  • in the fight scene her face was showed very little
  • the setting afluent the scene
  • in the opening scene there was no dialog
  • when the men it fight its show the female- women afraid
  • gives her accent, extric
  • does remember the last guy she slept with
stereotypical  women in the 1970s
negative presentation objectified and view as sexual objects

Van Zoonen theory

importance of gender being as seen as socially and culturally constructed through performance of these roles. gender can vary depending on cultural and historical contexts. for example in the clip of James bond in the man with  the golden gun where you can seen the female who was being viewed as a sexual object.

how are the women represente in the text:

In the scene with the women belly dancing the women is being represented as an object to the males eyes. This can be seen in the low angle shot of bond watching her dance. This can be linked with the theory mulvery scene because of bond watching her with dominance in his eyes. The low angel shot is creating a meaning of dominance and power over the women who is dancing. The opening scene has no dialogue  meaning that all the attention was on the females this is another way that the scene is representing females as an object. Another part of the scene is the close up shots of the women body which is showing that she is being sexualised. This can be linked in with the theory of van zoonen as the females are being objectified, being seen as sexual objects. This all can be linked with the 1970s as that how women were being treated back in those days, they were saw are objects who sleeps around and its is a negative representation of what women were seen as.

Tuesday 26th September 2023  Gender and bond beyond
LO: to investigate the theoretical framework in particular representation in media texts.
To discuss various gender theories and critically apply theory to texts.

oppression: prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority.

what stereotypical representation are present:
  • the stereotypes that were represented was the male character leading the female, this shows him being charming and a leader, you can also that by the he dressed which was formal and shows his authority even when wearing mask. he is very welled dress showing he is dom
  • the female was dresses very nicely and has an accent which is to makes her sound sexy, she is shown to be wanted to have fun and didn't have any knowledge, she basically there to look pretty. she was being objectified.

how are our characters represented:
  • bond is very confidents and formal, he leading the female into the room.
  • the female wasn't dressed like the belly dancer, however is stilled dressed to impressed.

what performances are reproduced for our genders
  • she feminine, she dressed in a dress not a costume, make up, responds, react to him rather then having her own actions, she follows and submissive.
  • bond is stereotypical male, he wears a suit, he a leader and patriarchy.

the gadgets are male
dominate male
window dressed dress the part, she doesnt show emotions like she does care, she cold, seen as sexual object,
the sectary shown not to be important
winow is weak
only seen for the male eyes
bond is stronge

The gender performance in the media text is being represented women as objects. This can been seen in the mid shot of bond having pinned the widow against the wall, that scene is showing the widow being weak and submits to bond, meaning that the represented of women are being treated as objects, which linked with Van zoomer theory about how female are being used as sexual objects for the male.

Monday 2nd October 2023    race
LO: to investigate the stereotype of race in texts. to discuss race theories and to critically apply theory to text.

the character are presented to the audience as powerful and fearless. you can see that in the way they stand, what they are wearing, and the movement, this is to make the audience think that they are going to war. the camera angle is low to create power.

black panther notes!!
  • positive African culture which is shown by the traditional clothing, the face/body paint, the beads, piercing
  • the weapon embracing the culture
  • the ceremony
  • the community was welcoming as they were cheering and waving.
  • clever, funny and open close family even with the royal
  • traditional music, drums, singing
  • positive treble and native
  • the female are seen as equal and positive

negative-
  • spears quite primitive and volent
  • tribal costume was a mix of culture
  • the accent mix of accent not a true one from the country

Tuesday 3rd October 2023       race
LO: to investigate the principles behind theories of representation of race.
TO discuss various theories on racial representation and to critically apply this theory to texts.

keys notes: representation, stereotype, not one true meaning, ideology,

ideology: set of believes and values behind the stereotype.

if there is one there to be opposite of the thing (good/bad. black/white. east/west.)

Alvarado's theory of ethnicity and racial stereotypes:

racial stereotype one: PITIED. someone who is vulnerable and in need of help and sympathy.
racial stereotype two: DANGEROUS. someone who is aggressive or violent and needs to be feared.
racial stereotype three: EXOTIC. someone who is culturally unusual strange exciting or other.
racial stereotype four: HUMOUROUS/COMIC. Someone who is funny and should be laughed at or with.

this advert is make to made you feel sorry for the boy and to feel pitted and its show someone who is in need of help and to make you feel sympathy.

The black panther relates to the racial representations in the beginning of the film, the representation of Africa is positive. You can seen this by what they are wearing which is traditional clothing. They have face and body paint, wearing beads and piercing. This is creating a postitive representation of the culture and Africa. Another representation that the community is loving and welcoming this is seen by the cheering and the music, everyone seems to be friendly.  Even the females are seen to be equal that could be seen by what they are wearing which looks like warrior clothing, by the way the stand which confidents and power. Hall theory can be linked to this as some people can see this as positive and some can see this as negative because of how Africa has be represented.

Monday 9th October 2023.    Ideologies

LO: to investigate how representation can produce ideologies. TO discuss various theories. To critically apply theory to texts.

The audience are expected to think of war when they look at this image. From the what they wear such as the old man who is wearing an hat an the clothing. The colour palette is traudicual for war which is war.  the faceual expression is happy to be in war.

this was to give you idea that going to war was a great idea, that its a good thing.

todorov theory is breaking dow into 5.

  1. Equilibrium
  2. disruption to the equilibrium
  3. recognition of disruption
  4. resolution
  5. A new equilibrium is established at the end

apocalypse:

fire- repeated explosions- mental fire in his head

PTSD- war remained in his head

drug and alcohol abuse - lost of marriage

vulnerable person- volent also at risk, mentally in two worlds

dominant reading- war is harmful and dangerous, its is destroying everything around you.

negotiated reading- war is might needed to happened.

oppositional reading- Was isn't needed, even if you win the war you still lost, the solders has be traumatised, they will not want to fight again, there loves have lost there husband/father/son.

fish tank:

lower social-eciomonic

mum- stereotype- messy, smoking clothing, lots of boyfriends

britishteen- aggrieves, spots clothing, causal joggers,

the dominant reading- some parents are like that but they do not need to be a lower social economic.

ideology meaning:

a system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy.

The ideologies in the apocalypse are creating PTSD. The the remains in his head. This is seen when he is looking up at the ceiling, and the sound of the helicopter. This is showing that the war remains in his head and the fire repeated to show in his mental thoughts. The ideologies in this sections is the domiate reading. War is harmful, dangerous and it is desorting everything around them.

Tuesday 10th October 2023  Masculinity

LO: to investigate how representation of masculinity differ. To discuss various theories on masculinity. To critically apply theory to text and explore the impact of the representation.

The representation that are created is stereotype masculinity. This is shown by the looks and the strong body. He is handing from a cliff showing of his abs and the danger. The masculinity that is being defined here is how he is daring and brave. The audience are expected to think that he is a strong, daring handsome man who has a good body.

masculinity is being represented by him hitting her this is showing his power of the female and the domence he has. He is wearing nice and formal clothing, showing he an important business man who is maybe a leader. He has money. The text is telling us about masculinity, to be a husband is to be suspicion and to question their wives.

 the diet coke ad:

the male is physical which showing he is strong, could be show by his body and he had no shirt on.

It shown for the female pleasure

The females are in an office work which shows that females are more dominate then the male because consting work is lower then office work.

not mentally change

the camera angle is low for the office female making them seem more powerful

the camera angle for the male is high angle.

the females are all skinny and good weight.

masculinity is represented in the diet coke ad his could be shown in the male appearance. The males in the ad is physically strong, this is shown when he is taking his shirt off. He had a nice ton body and nice muscular arms. He is working on a construction site, that could be seen in the background with the tools and wood. However the roles are swapped for the females and males. The males are seen as for the females pleasure as they watch them from an office working building. The females working in the working office is making them dominance over the males. office work is higher payed then construction. The camera angle for the female was a low angle shot which is creating to show that they have more power and for the male it is high angle which creates to show that they are for the females eyes and that they aren't mentally challenge to work in an office job and are best for the physical things and for their looks.

The masculinity is being represented in the print advert as the male is topping the very beautiful female. They are very handsome and strong. It can be shown with the shirtless males who has a good fit body. There arms are strong and there body is shinny. The male who has the very pretty female pinned onto the floor it is creating the masculinity stereotype as he has control over her and he is dominance. The wide shot of the males standing around is showing the power. They are standing tall like they have power and strength, they are clean shaven. This links to

Monday 30th October 2023.    Assessment

Lo: to demonstrate knowledge of media theories, to apply media theory to text. To critically explore a text using media theory.

notes stranger things:

representation-

  • the school is being shown as an american high school
  • with the bullying, different groups
  • stereotype of police

media language-

  • mid short of the door where the monster was.
  • close up of the light
  • eastabing short of the place
  • close up on the badge
  • the older son cooking acting like the parent
  • mum only parent
  • old tv, old phone
  • diesgret of intense music
  • tracking of the chief

Representations can vary within long form television drama. The audience might respond to and interpret these representations differently.

In stranger things the audience might respond differently to the representation that are shown for example the hight school life. The audience may think this is represented badly or good. For example in the mid short scene with the boys and the bullies that can be shown of the stereotype of a American high school. Some people may find this representation of bullying to be unrealistic and some may find this a good example. The high school life and bullying is representing a drama tv series that the viewers may find interesting

Another representation of different forms of Drama being shown in television is the tension and horror. For example, when the boy ran to the room in the backgarderd, the diegesis sound of the music playing was intense, the mid short of the door where the monster is creepily appearing is creating tension. Some of the audience may interpert that as a representation of drama.

The media context have influenced different aspects of what the representation of drama series to look like and how they can response to it. Stranger things shares a wide ranges of different aspect of where that could be shown. with the classic high school life with normal drama like the mid short of Nancy and her boyfriend in the bathroom kissing to where someone is being kidnapped by a creepy monster. either way drama is being shown.

Barthes theory is being shown in the scene with the mum and the police when they are in the chief office. The chief is wearing a uniform with a badge that is showing that he is the boss. The badge also shows his authority over the mother who is looking for her son. Butler is another theory that is being represented. In the scene with the mother where she looking for a keys, it is sharing a bit of a stereotype of a single mum. single mums are known to be neglectful and are a broken family who don't have a job, however the mother does seem to be a little bit neglectful as we see with the wide short of the older son being the parent as he is cooking and has to wake up his little brother. The mother does have a job and trying her best to provide for the family which does against the stereotype, But the family is broken as the father isn't with them which is the stereotype of a single mum.

Monday 6th November 2023  Media theory: DIRT

LO: to reflect an areas to improve. To improve applications of media theory. To improve critical exploration of a text using theoretical framework.

target:

representation- stereotypical caring for her kids, panic, confident. mike mum is stereotypical mum, cooking, cleaning and telling her kids off. she the one in control of the family and not the dad who is quiet. child is missing, speaking to Jonathan. also in the police station she is confident. persistent with hopper, gets him to act. breakfast table and also when she is dismissing the kids.
Hopper as a man and police officer- drunk and incapable.

The representation in the text is the gender. This is seen with mike mum as she is a stereotypical mum who does the cleaning, cooking and telling her kids off, which is a stereotype of a women and mum even in the 80s which was were woman was more of being a mother and taking care of the house. This can been seen around the dinner table where she has to tell her kids off, however she goes against the stereotype as she is the one in control of the family whereas the dad isn't he is just quiet. In the text its showing that females can have power and also taking care of the kids. Woman were in the 80s were learning to taking control while also being able to look after their children.

Another representation is Joyce who is a working mum. She is a stereotypical woman who is trying to provide for her kids, she also seen looking panic when she can't find her son which shows she cares for him and is being a good mother. Joyce also goes against the stereotype of being a woman she she seen as confident when talker to the police offer. She is damding for Hopper to find her son and gets him to act. This is seen in the scene of Hopper office, but this is representing that she cares about her son. This wasn't that normal at the time in the 80s for female to be damdning to a male and with someone who has more power and authority over her. The dialogue when she calls the other mum looking for her son, you can here the panic in her voice, but when talking to hopper she is firm.

The last example of gender is Hopper. He is a police officer who is a messy and drunk man. This can be seen with the close up of the empty drink cans, ash tray, the take away. He is seen as someone who is unorganised and is a messy person.
